Terms of Service
1. Welcome
These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your use of the BookNerds mobile application ("the App"), operated by De Groot Ventures Inc ("we", "us", "our"). By creating an account or using the App, you agree to these Terms. If you don't agree, please don't use the App.
2. What BookNerds Does
BookNerds is a personalized book discovery app. It helps you:
- Discover books through a personalized feed tailored to your preferences
- Follow authors to stay up to date on their releases
- Organize your reading with shelves (Wishlist, Read, Favorites)
- Subscribe to release calendars via iCal integration
- Find books to buy through links to Amazon
We don't sell books directly — we provide links to third-party retailers.
3. Your Account
To use BookNerds, you sign in with your email address. We send you a one-time passcode each time you log in — no password to remember.
You agree to:
- Provide a valid email address
- Keep your account to yourself (one person per account)
- Not create multiple accounts
- Let us know if someone else gains access to your account
We may suspend or delete accounts that violate these Terms.
4. Your Data
We collect and use your data to make BookNerds work and to personalize your experience. Here's what we collect:
- Email address — for authentication and communication
- Genre preferences — selected during onboarding
- Book interactions — which books you add to shelves, favorite, or skip
- Author follows — which authors you follow
- App usage data — to improve recommendations and fix bugs
We use this data to:
- Power your personalized book feed
- Send you relevant notifications about new releases
- Improve the App over time
We store your data using Supabase, our backend infrastructure provider. We don't sell your personal data to third parties.

5. Third-Party Services
BookNerds relies on third-party services we don't control:
- Book purchases — When you tap "Buy," you are taken to an external retailer (such as Amazon). Your purchase is between you and that retailer, subject to their terms and policies. We are not responsible for pricing, availability, or fulfillment.
- Book metadata — We source book information (titles, authors, cover images, descriptions) from external databases.
- Email delivery — We use a third-party email provider to deliver login passcodes.
We're not responsible for the availability, accuracy, or practices of these third-party services.
6. Intellectual Property
- Book content — Book titles, descriptions, cover images, and author information are the property of their respective publishers and rights holders. We display this content for informational and discovery purposes.
- The App — The BookNerds app, including its design, code, algorithms, and branding, is the property of De Groot Ventures Inc. You may not copy, modify, reverse-engineer, or redistribute any part of the App.
- Your data — You retain ownership of any personal data you provide. By using the App, you grant us a license to use that data to operate and improve the service.
7. Acceptable Use
Please use BookNerds respectfully. You agree not to:
- Attempt to access other users' accounts or data
- Use automated tools to scrape or interact with the App
- Interfere with the App's operation or infrastructure
- Use the App for any unlawful purpose
- Misrepresent your identity
8. Disclaimers
BookNerds is provided "as is" and "as available." We do our best to keep things running smoothly, but we can't guarantee:
- The App will always be available or error-free
- Book information will always be accurate or up to date
- Recommendations will match your tastes perfectly
- Third-party links will always work
To the fullest extent permitted by law, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement.
9. Limitation of Liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, De Groot Ventures Inc shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of the App. This includes, but is not limited to, issues with third-party purchases, data loss, or service interruptions.
Our total liability for any claim related to the App shall not exceed the amount you paid us in the 12 months preceding the claim (which, since BookNerds is free, is $0).
10. Termination
You can stop using BookNerds at any time. If you'd like your account and data deleted, contact us at the address below.
We may suspend or terminate your access if you violate these Terms or if we need to discontinue the service. We'll make reasonable efforts to notify you in advance, but we're not required to.
11. Changes to These Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. When we do, we'll update the "Last Updated" date at the top. Continued use of the App after changes take effect means you accept the updated Terms.
For significant changes, we'll make reasonable efforts to notify you (for example, through an in-app notice).
12. Governing Law
These Terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the jurisdiction in which De Groot Ventures Inc is incorporated, without regard to conflict of law principles.
